Ayurveda explains importance of health and 4 goals of life

Why Health is important

Ayurveda, the ancient science of life, is more than just a system of healing. It is a holistic guide for living a purposeful, balanced, and healthy life. One of the most profound teachings in Ayurveda is its alignment with the four Purusharthas — the fundamental goals of human life according to Indian philosophy. These are: Dharma (righteous duty), Artha (wealth), Kama (desire), and Moksha (liberation).

According to Ayurveda, good health is not an end in itself, but a foundation for fulfilling these four goals. When the body and mind are in harmony, one is empowered to live meaningfully and consciously.

1. Dharma (धर्म) — Righteousness or Duty

Dharma refers to living in accordance with one’s moral, social, and spiritual responsibilities. It includes duties toward oneself, family, society, and the divine.

  • Ayurveda supports dharma by emphasizing ethical conduct (Sadvritta) and a balanced lifestyle (Dinacharya).
  • Only a healthy individual can perform their responsibilities effectively, with clarity and commitment.

2. Artha (अर्थ) — Wealth and Prosperity

Artha signifies the pursuit of material well-being, financial stability, and the means to support one’s life and duties.

  • Ayurveda empowers this pursuit by helping maintain physical vitality and mental clarity, essential for work, business, and decision-making.
  • Ill health can hinder one’s ability to earn and manage resources, making health a crucial pillar of prosperity.

3. Kama (काम) — Desire and Fulfillment

Kama relates to the enjoyment of life’s pleasures — love, art, beauty, companionship, and emotional satisfaction.

  • Ayurveda teaches how to enjoy sensory pleasures mindfully and in moderation.
  • Balanced health allows one to fully engage in meaningful relationships and joyful experiences without overindulgence or harm.

4. Moksha (मोक्ष) — Liberation and Spiritual Freedom

Moksha is the ultimate goal of life — freedom from the cycle of birth and death, and realization of the true self.

  • Ayurveda aids spiritual pursuit by recommending a sattvic (pure) diet and lifestyle that promote clarity, calmness, and inner awareness.
  • Physical and mental health are essential to sustain spiritual practices such as meditation, self-inquiry, and detachment.

The Ayurvedic View: Health as the Foundation

This profound connection is beautifully captured in the ancient Ayurvedic text, Charaka Samhita:

"धर्मार्थकाममोक्षाणां आरोग्यं मूलमुत्तमम् | रोगास् तस्यापदानीहि सर्वा अर्थाः शरीरस्थाः ||" (Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana 1.15)

Translation:

“Health is the supreme foundation of virtue (dharma), wealth (artha), desire (kama), and liberation (moksha). Disease destroys health and thus becomes the obstacle to all these goals, which depend upon the body.”

In Summary

Ayurveda is a guide for achieving total well-being. It supports:

  • Dharma through ethical and mindful living,
  • Artha through energy and clarity for work,
  • Kama through joyful, balanced experiences,
  • Moksha through purity and spiritual focus.

By prioritizing health, Ayurveda enables us to live a full life, rooted in purpose, joy, prosperity, and ultimately, liberation.
