Ayurveda, the ancient science of life, is more than just a system of healing. It is a holistic guide for living a purposeful, balanced, and healthy life. One of the most profound teachings in Ayurveda is its alignment with the four Purusharthas — the fundamental goals of human life according to Indian philosophy. These are: Dharma (righteous duty), Artha (wealth), Kama (desire), and Moksha (liberation).
According to Ayurveda, good health is not an end in itself, but a foundation for fulfilling these four goals. When the body and mind are in harmony, one is empowered to live meaningfully and consciously.
Dharma refers to living in accordance with one’s moral, social, and spiritual responsibilities. It includes duties toward oneself, family, society, and the divine.
Artha signifies the pursuit of material well-being, financial stability, and the means to support one’s life and duties.
Kama relates to the enjoyment of life’s pleasures — love, art, beauty, companionship, and emotional satisfaction.
Moksha is the ultimate goal of life — freedom from the cycle of birth and death, and realization of the true self.
This profound connection is beautifully captured in the ancient Ayurvedic text, Charaka Samhita:
"धर्मार्थकाममोक्षाणां आरोग्यं मूलमुत्तमम् | रोगास् तस्यापदानीहि सर्वा अर्थाः शरीरस्थाः ||" (Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana 1.15)
Translation:
“Health is the supreme foundation of virtue (dharma), wealth (artha), desire (kama), and liberation (moksha). Disease destroys health and thus becomes the obstacle to all these goals, which depend upon the body.”
Ayurveda is a guide for achieving total well-being. It supports:
By prioritizing health, Ayurveda enables us to live a full life, rooted in purpose, joy, prosperity, and ultimately, liberation.
